Ian’s skateboarding journey started in 1985, inspired by the legendary Marty McFly in Back to the Future at the age of 10! His first skateboard opened the door to a whole new world of thrills, fuelled by legendary brands like Powell Peralta, Santa Cruz, Vans, and Thrasher. A few trips to the iconic Rom Skatepark in his youth ignited his passion for the sport and introduced him to an inspiring community of skateboarders who were doing things that seemed totally impossible!
Skateboarding became Ian’s escape and sense of belonging throughout his teenage years, where the joy, sense of community, and the support of fellow skaters kept him rolling, despite the inevitable bumps and bruises along the way. But, like many, university and a busy career in digital led Ian to hang up his board for over 25 years.
Then, during the summer of 2020, with the world in lockdown, Ian took a much-needed career break and reconnected with his childhood passion. He grabbed a new skateboard (and plenty of protective gear!) and rediscovered the thrill of rolling again. Fast forward to today, and at the young age of 50, Ian has swapped a successful career leading digital strategies for charities and non-profits to focus on what he loves most – coaching and inspiring a new generation of skateboarders.
As a passionate ambassador for skateboarding, Ian is eager to show that skateboarding is for everyone. No matter your age, background, or skill level, there’s a place for you in the skateboarding community! He’s a firm believer in the incredible physical and mental benefits the sport offers – something he’s especially passionate about sharing, thanks to his own personal experiences with mental health. Ian knows firsthand how skateboarding can provide a sense of escape, community, and resilience, and he’s proud to advocate for inclusivity and equality within the sport.
Ian has experience working with neurodiverse groups and is always eager to make sure everyone, regardless of their background or skill level, feels supported and empowered through skateboarding.
Ian holds official qualifications and coaching membership with Skateboard GB, is Safeguarding trained, and has an Updated Enhanced DBS certification.
